(A Free Tip From a Popular Dog Training Discussion Forum)

John Writes:

My 2 year old pit bull has never shown any food aggression towards
humans but since I just picked up a new yellow lab puppy she has.
He will try to eat her food she will snarl and growl and typically he will
back off but sometimes mainly with her beef bone she will be chewing
on it and he will come over and try to share it with her she will start to
snarl and growl but he just doesn't seem to get it and he will continue
taking over the bone she will just sit there growling while he proceeds to
take over the bone. Occasionally she will just pick it up and walk away
but he will follow and do it again.

I was thinking maybe it was because I picked him up early, 7 weeks,
and he may not have had the proper socialization as to signs she is
sending him or if he is just naturally a more dominant dog. I have began
just removing the bone but should i just let them work it out for
themselves? Also she tends to ignore him allot is it normal for the
existing dog to get jealous of new puppy?

DogProblems.com Dog Training Advisor Responds:

Hi, John:

Feed them separately. If you see her exhibit ANY aggression toward
the puppy, you're going to need to correct her using the techniques
in the
"Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer" book.

Do not leave the puppy around your older dog unsupervised. She should
not be showing this type of aggression toward a puppy in the first
place, so there is something unbalanced about that. If she were to
over-correct your puppy before the first year of age, your puppy will
then grow to be
dog aggressive. So, it's just not a good idea, all the
way around.

DPTrainer4 Dog Training Advisor Responds:

Just as an extra note, although I'm sure you're doing this already...
be sure to get your Lab out and around people as much as possible
once she has some booster shots on board. This way your nieces (I
think? I know they're children but don't remember their relation to you)
will have a dog with whom they can socialize at your house and your pit
bull can stay in her safe zone. Be sure they are gentle with her though,
because a lot of things that
children like to do with pets (hug them,
dress them up, etc) are actually not forms of endearment to dogs...this
is a great opportunity for them to learn how to act around a puppy (if
they don't know already, I don't want to insult their intelligence!) and for
the puppy to learn how to tolerate little people and their actions.

Remember.........

A properly trained dog will respond to all of his owner’s commands, and will not
display anxiety, displeasure or confusion.

A good dog training program will focus on allowing the dog to learn just what is
expected, and will use positive reinforcement to reward desired behaviors.
